Animal Attacks & Dog Bites
Michigan Animal Attack & Dog Bite Claims
Michigan has one of the strongest dog bite statutes in the country, holding animal owners strictly liable when their animals injure people. Unlike many states that require proof the owner knew the animal was dangerous, Michigan's law imposes liability on the first bite. At Koussan Law, we represent victims of dog attacks, animal maulings, and other animal-related injuries throughout Michigan.
Michigan's Strict Liability Dog Bite Statute
Under MCL § 287.351, the owner of a dog that bites a person is liable for damages if the victim was not trespassing and did not provoke the dog. This is a strict liability statute — meaning the owner is liable regardless of whether they knew the dog was dangerous or had ever bitten anyone before. There is no "one free bite" rule in Michigan. This makes Michigan one of the most victim-friendly states for dog bite claims.
Beyond Dog Bites
While dog bites are the most common animal attack claims, Michigan law also provides remedies for injuries caused by other animals. Attacks by cats, horses, livestock, exotic pets, and wild animals kept in captivity can give rise to negligence claims against the owner. Landlords who allow tenants to keep dangerous animals may also be liable. We handle all types of animal attack cases.
Compensation for Animal Attack Injuries
Animal attacks can cause devastating injuries: deep lacerations, puncture wounds, crush injuries from large dogs, facial disfigurement (particularly in children), nerve damage, infections including rabies exposure, broken bones, and severe psychological trauma including PTSD. Children are disproportionately victims of dog attacks and often suffer facial injuries that require reconstructive surgery. We pursue compensation for all medical treatment, scarring, disfigurement, pain and suffering, and psychological harm.
