Payment of personal protection insurance benefits for accident occurring out of state.

PIP benefits are payable for accidents anywhere in the United States, its territories and possessions, or Canada, if the injured person was a named insured, spouse or resident relative under a Michigan PIP policy, or an occupant of a vehicle involved in the accident who was a Michigan resident or whose vehicle was insured under a Michigan PIP policy.
How this section works in practice
Michigan PIP follows the policyholder across state and national lines. Benefits are payable for accidents anywhere in the United States, its territories and possessions, or Canada, if the injured person was a named insured, the spouse of a named insured or a resident relative under a Michigan PIP policy. Occupants of a vehicle involved in the accident are also covered if they were Michigan residents or if the vehicle was insured under a Michigan policy.
The practical effect is that a Michigan family hurt in Ohio, Florida or Ontario claims the same PIP benefits, at the same coverage level and under the same priority rules, that they would claim after a crash in Detroit. What changes is the liability side: the lawsuit against the at-fault driver is governed by the law of the state where the crash happened, which usually means no serious-impairment threshold and different insurance minimums. Accidents outside the United States and Canada are not covered by PIP at all.

Sec. 3111.
Personal protection insurance benefits are payable for accidental bodily injury suffered in an accident occurring out of this state, if the accident occurs within the United States, its territories and possessions, or Canada, and the person whose injury is the basis of the claim was at the time of the accident a named insured under a personal protection insurance policy, the spouse of a named insured, a relative of either domiciled in the same household, or an occupant of a vehicle involved in the accident, if the occupant was a resident of this state or if the owner or registrant of the vehicle was insured under a personal protection insurance policy or provided security approved by the secretary of state under section 3101(5).
