Michigan No-Fault Law, section by section › MCL 500.3141
Notice of accident.
In plain terms
An insurer may require written notice as soon as practicable after an accident involving an insured vehicle.
How this section works in practice
The shortest section in the chapter. An insurer may require written notice of an accident as soon as practicable after it happens. Most policies contain such a clause, and giving prompt written notice is the first step in any PIP claim: it starts the paper trail, it lets the adjuster open a file, and it is separate from the one-year written notice of injury that section 3145 requires to keep the claim alive. Report the accident to your own insurer in writing even if you were a passenger, a pedestrian or in someone else's car, because the priority rules in section 3114 usually make your household policy the payer.
