Taking costs into account in making and regulating rates.
In plain terms
The reasonable costs of handling assigned claims are recognized in setting auto liability and PIP rates.
How this section works in practice
A one-sentence funding rule. The reasonable costs of handling and paying assigned claims, including the assessments members pay under section 3171, are taken into account in setting rates for auto liability and personal protection insurance. In other words, the safety net for uninsured pedestrians and passengers is paid for by everyone who buys a Michigan policy, which is one reason the act pursues uninsured owners so aggressively under section 3177.
